많은 사람들과 함께 공유할 수 있다는 것이 기쁩니다.

디자이너로서 블로그가 당신의 삶과 일(경력)에 큰 변화를 줬을 거라 생각하는데요. 어떤 변화가 있었나요? 혼돈이 있었던 것 같아요. 저는 디자이너는 아닙니다. 그러니 블로그는 제 삶에 많은 영향을 주지는 않았습니다.

 

블로그에 다양한 디자인관련 내용들이 있기는 하지만 블로그가 당신의 사업과 관련이 있는 것 같지는 않습니다. 그렇다면 블로그는 당신에게 어떤 의미를 가지고 있습니까? 저는 작가이기에 블로그 자체가 저의 일입니다. 그런 의미에서 블로그는 제 전부라 할 수 있어요. 블로그는 제 집이고 그리고 제가 원하는 모든 것을 말할 수 있는 소중한 공간입니다.

 

당신의 블로그가 디자인 분야에서 유명해지고 영향을 끼치게 된 계기가 있었을 것 같은데요. 말씀해 주실 수 있나요? 블로거들에 대한 뉴욕타임즈지의 기사였죠. 그 기사덕분에 많은 사람들이 블로그에 들어오게 되고 새로운 독자층을 얻게 되었습니다. 그 때부터 자연스럽게 조금씩 유명해지기 시작했죠.

 

많은 한국의 여성들이 블로그를 통해서 디자인이나 여러 가지 정보들을 공유하고 있는데요. "The Biz Ladies"에 대해 설명해 주시겠습니까? The Biz Ladies는 디자이너들이 그들이 속한 지역에서 후원자를 찾도록 도와주고 다양한 분야에서 전문가의 의견을 무료로 제공하는 그룹입니다. 미국 내 디자인 분야는 경쟁이 매우 심하지만, 저는 그들에게 경쟁보다는 공유의 미덕을 길러주고 싶습니다.

 

미래의 디자이너들을 육성하는데 매우 관심을 가지고 활동하시는 모습이 인상적인데요. "Design Sponge Scholarship"에 대해서도 설명해 주시겠습니까? 저는 학생들의 디자인을 좋아하고 이러한 학생들을 후원하고 싶습니다. 그들은 우리가 블로그에 쓰려고 하는 다음 세대의 디자이너들이기 때문이기도 하죠. 우리가 그들을 후원하지 않으면 우리가 미래에 쓸 거리도 많지 않겠죠. ^^

 

블로그에 보니까 "Video"라는 새로운 게시판이 생겼던데요, 어떤 내용들로 꾸미실 생각인가요? 블로그에 다양한 비디오들을 선보이고 있는데, 요리부터 DIY 그리고 여러 다른 정보제공 컨텐츠입니다.

 

홈인테리어나 DIY, 여러 가지 디자인에 관심이 많은 블로거들에게 한 말씀 부탁드립니다. 잘 알고 좋아하는 것에 집중하세요. 만약 특정한 분야에 관심이 있다면, 그것을 고수하세요. 저는 사람들이 자기가 잘 알고 있는 특정 분야를 다른 사람과 공유하는 것이 좋다고 생각합니다. 예를 들면, 한국의 디자인을 볼 수 있는 블로그가 있다면 좋겠죠.

 

블로그를 운영하는 것이 'solo business'에 효과가 있다고 생각하십니까? 현재의 경제체제가 무너지기 전까지는 당연히 효과적이겠죠. 그러나 요즘은 광고의 수가 줄어든 만큼 점점 힘들어지고 있는 것도 사실입니다.

 

많은 디자이너들이 뉴욕생활을 동경하고 있습니다. 뉴욕에 사는 것이 당신의 사업이나 경력에 도움이 될 거라고 생각하세요? 글쎄요, 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다. 이전에 만들어놨던 인간관계가 더 중요하다고 생각하지만, 요즘은 컴퓨터의 보급으로 인해 직접적인 만남이 아니라 인터넷상으로 커넥션을 만드는 것도 가능합니다. 뉴욕은 멋진 도시기에 직장이 있는 것이 나쁘지는 않겠죠. ^^

 

블로그에 올리신 걸 보면 건축에서부터 인테리어 디자인까지 사진이 다양한데요. 디자인에서 가장 관심있는 분야와 철학은 무엇인가요? 철학이 있다기 보단 마음에 드는 것이 있으면 올리는 것 뿐이에요. 순전히 내가 좋아하는 것들로 채워진 나의 개인적 취향의 컨텐츠로 가득합니다. 지금은 빈티지 스타일의 가구와 모던함을 조합하는 인테리어 뿐만 아니라 텍스타일과 벽지 디자인에 매우 흥미를 느끼고 있습니다.

 

앞으로 5년에서 10년 내에 이루고 싶으신 개인적인 목표가 있으시다면요? 흠… 블로그들은 그렇게 멀리 생각하지 않습니다. 나는 다음주만을 생각합니다. ^^

As a designer, your blog should have changed your life and career. What would that be? I'm not sure if we have a translation issue here- I'm not a designer, so the blog hasn't done anything for my work. ;)

 

In the blog, there are various designs; however, it seems you don’t really relate the blog with your business. What does blog mean to you? The blog is my business- I'm a writer. So in that case, it's everything to me, because it's the place I call home and the place where I can write what I'd like to say about things.

 

There should be a turning point that your blog became famous and influential in the design field. Would you share with us? The turning point was an article written in the NY Times about bloggers- that really boosted traffic and helped us find a new audience. It's grown organically since.

 

Many Korean women share information on design and many others through blogs. Would you explain about “The Biz Ladies”? The Biz Ladies group was created to help designers find a local support group, and to provide them with free advice from experts on various topics. In American the design scene can be very competitive so I wanted to foster a spirit of sharing, rather than competing.

 

I was impressed that you also actively involved in cultivating future designers. Would you explain about “Design Sponge Scholarship”? The scholarship was my way of saying, I love student design and want to support these students, as they're the next generation of designers we'll be writing about. If we don't support them, we won't have much to write about in the future ;)

 

In the blog, there is new section called “Video”. What is it and what contents will be posting? We're posting various videos on the site now, whether they're cooking segments, DIY projects or more informational series.

 

Would you give advices for bloggers who are interested in home interior, DIY, or any other types of design? I'd say stick to what you know well and love- if you have a particular interest in the field, stick to that. I love when people have a niche that they know a lot about and can share with others. For example, I'd love to see a? blog about South Korean design!

 

Do you think that blogging is effective for ‘solo business’? Until our economy crashed, yes. But now it's tougher because people aren't advertising like they used to.

 

Many designers are longing for New York life. Do you think that living in NY helps to achieve your business and career? Well, it certainly doesn't help. It was instrumental in the contacts I made early on, but now, with the internet, it makes it possible to make connections over the computer that you don't need to do in person anymore. But NY is a fabulous city, it never hurts your job to be here ;)

 

When I see the posting in the blog, pictures vary from architecture to interior design. What are your main interests and philosophy in design? I don't have a real philosophy, other than- if it makes me happy, I'll post it. D*S is driven mainly by my personal interests so I like to let it change and grow with my own tastes. Right now i'm very interested in textile and wallpaper design, as well as interiors that combine vintage furniture with contemporary settings.

 

What is your personal goal in 5 or 10 years? Hmm...I don't think bloggers think that far ahead. I only think to next week ;)
